Body of work

Monica Majoli (right), professor of art

During her three decades of artmaking, Monica Majoli (above right), professor of art, has explored male bodies and sexuality through provocative paintings evoking power and mortality. The female body, however, has given her pause. “I’ve always been hesitant about engaging with the female form in my work because it’s been exploited and exhausted in so many ways, historically speaking,” said Majoli. She is now facing that challenge with the help of a 2026 Guggenheim Fellowship, which will support a female-focused corpus, Ovulars.

Not-so-sacred texts

This summer, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” turned a nearly 3,000-year-old epic poem into a global blockbuster, packing theaters around the world. At UC Irvine, the film’s success came as no surprise. In the Department of Classics, courses on Greek gods and heroes and their geopolitical contexts across the centuries have been filling lecture halls with students from across campus for decades. “I think there’s no future in the classics, or in any field, if you treat it as a butterfly under glass. We want audiences to engage actively with these millennia-old texts,” said Zina Giannopoulou, professor and chair of classics.

Comfort foods are often associated with warmth, tradition and sensory satisfaction – but they don’t have to be heavy and full of extra calories to be delicious. “This month’s recipes are made for a leisurely evening at home,” said Jessica VanRoo, executive chef at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, part of UCI Health. “They have the deep flavors of something that simmered all afternoon yet come together in about an hour using one pan or baking sheet.”
