Kakuma Sound, an organization operating out of the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, has been selected as one of only 16 projects worldwide to receive vital support from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The funding directly validates its core partnership with UC Irvine’s Alec Glasser Center for the Power of Music and Social Change and the School of Social Ecology. “This achievement would not have been possible without the support, guidance and partnership of the Alec Glasser Center for the Power of Music and Social Change and the School of Social Ecology,” said Treynor Tumwa, executive director of Kakuma Sound. “Your belief in our vision and your continued investment in community-led initiatives have played a significant role in helping us reach this milestone.” |

Looking for something to do over the summer? The UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art offers free admission and is a short ride from campus via the free MuseumConnect shuttle. Now on view are three exciting exhibitions: Raymond Saunders: Flowers from a Black Garden, featuring more than five decades of the artist's bold, improvisational paintings; Staging California in Early Hollywood, exploring how Southern California painters helped shape the magic of early cinema; and Collection Dialogues, showcasing selections from the museum's newly united permanent collection. New this summer, the museum is open until 8 p.m. every Friday through August. |

Dr. Jeffry Nahmias has been selected as a full member of the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. A trauma and critical care surgeon at UCI Health and chief of the Division of Trauma, Burns, Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery in the School of Medicine, Nahmias is one of only 250 surgeons worldwide selected for this prestigious honor. |

Jane Stoever, professor of law, was named a Distinguished Citizen and inducted into the City of Irvine’s Wall of Recognition at a June 9 ceremony and City Council meeting. Established in 2006, the City of Irvine’s Wall of Recognition honors individuals, groups, organizations and businesses that have made significant contributions to the community. Stoever was nominated by Irvine City Councilmember Melinda Liu. |
