| A new study by UC Irvine researchers found that wildfires follow predictable patterns of destruction, and structural elements such as fences, siding, and eaves contribute greatly to the risk of fire spreading. A first-of-its-kind, 100-meter-resolution risk map developed by the team can aid in land-use planning, fire mitigation investments and community defense. “As fire season stretches longer into the year and blazes devastate communities across California, the need for precise, actionable fire risk data has never been greater,” said Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Irvine). “Good policy starts with good data. UC Irvine’s new fire risk map gives California exactly that – a clear picture of where the danger is greatest, so we can invest in smarter building practices, targeted fuel reduction and data-driven planning before disaster strikes rather than after.” |

| According to the latest UCI-OC Poll from the School of Social Ecology, the race for governor in Orange County is virtually tied with an electorate increasingly divided by generation and gender, even as it agrees on one defining demand: fixing the cost of housing. “This leaves Democrats and Republicans scrambling to assemble winning coalitions from a fragmented political landscape,” said Jon B. Gould, poll director and dean of the School of Social Ecology. |

| UCI Health collaborated with the Huntington Beach Fire Department and Huntington Beach Fire Department Marine Safety Division on a pediatric shoreline trauma simulation that began at the beach and ended at the UCI Health – Orange emergency department. The goal? To improve the outcomes of serious injuries that can occur while surfing or bodyboarding. "These trauma simulations are very important because they allow us to test our systems with our amazing first responders who bring patients to UCI Health – Orange,” said Dr. Jeffry Nahmias, trauma and critical care surgeon and pediatric trauma medical director with UCI Health. |
