The science of awe

Paul K. Piff, associate professor of psychology

Paul K. Piff, associate professor of psychology, spent the summer of 2025 turning the largest alpine lake in North America into a research laboratory. His team conducted seven field studies at locations across the Tahoe basin, from scenic overlooks and hiking trails to kayak launches, enrolling more than 1,000 participants in an ambitious real-world investigation of awe. “When people encounter something vast, whether it’s a sweeping landscape or a powerful shared moment, they often begin to see themselves and their relationships differently,” said Piff. “That’s what makes studying awe in real-world environments so important.”

Alumni through the decades: 1990s

Jocelyn Dubin ‘94

Not many dietitians can trace their career back to a women’s studies degree – though Jocelyn Dubin ‘94 can. Dubin arrived at UC Irvine and planned to become a therapist; she left as one of the university’s first women’s studies graduates and is proof that a humanities degree can lead just about anywhere. Today, she serves as the lead public health nutritionist for the Santa Clara County Public Health Department, helping local communities eat and live better.

Complimentary shuttle service for Spring Break

UC Irvine Transportation’s complimentary holiday shuttle has returned to support the Anteater community’s travel plans during Spring Break. Students, faculty and staff can utilize this service for a direct connection between the UC Irvine main campus and the John Wayne Airport or the Irvine Station. Reservations are encouraged and can be made through the T&DS website.

Match Day is an emotional culmination for so many talented future doctors across UC’s six medical schools. First held in 1952, Match Day was established by the National Residency Matching Program so that soon-to-be medical school graduates can all discover together where they will continue to learn and practice as residents for the next three to seven years. At UC Irvine, the stories of some of these students reflect the unique experiences that brought them to where they are today. Scroll to see photos from the event.
