Immigrant civic engagement

City of Long Beach pic

A new pilot study by UC Irvine researchers examines how immigrant residents engage with city services and government processes in Long Beach. It suggests that heightened federal immigration enforcement is undermining democratic participation, even among U.S. citizens who fear for undocumented family members. “Supporting immigrants’ civic engagement is key to strengthening democracy and good governance,” the report concludes. “If these goals can be achieved anywhere, it is in Long Beach, a highly diverse city with a history of supporting immigrants.”

Specific gene regulatory maps

Dr. Min Zhang and Dabao Zhang, both are UC Irvine professors of epidemiology and biostatistics

Researchers led by Dr. Min Zhang and Dabao Zhang of the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health have created the most detailed maps to date showing how genes causally regulate one another across different types of brain cells affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The study also identified numerous influential “hub genes” that offer promising new targets for early detection and therapeutic intervention. “Different types of brain cells play distinct roles in Alzheimer’s disease, but how they interact at the molecular level has remained unclear,” said Min Zhang (left), co-corresponding author and professor of epidemiology and biostatistics. “Our work provides cell type-specific maps of gene regulation in the Alzheimer’s brain, shifting the field from observing correlations to uncovering the causal mechanisms that actively drive disease progression.” The National Institute on Aging and the National Cancer Institute supported the work. #SpeakUp4Science

Sustainability is driving major cost savings across UC

The University of California has saved approximately $620 million since 2010 by improving the energy efficiency of its facilities, with $100 million of those savings in 2024 alone. The savings are reported in UC’s most recent Annual Sustainability Report and illustrate both the fiscal and environmental benefits of the university’s progress on reducing carbon emissions, generating less waste and consuming less water.

Celebrating community stories

Jungmin Lee ‘21 (B.A. literary journalism)

Jungmin Lee ‘21 (B.A. literary journalism) has never taken the traditional path. From L.A. City Council chambers to popup markets celebrating Asian American heritage, the UC Irvine alumna has built a career around a singular purpose: telling the stories of communities too often ignored. “Empowering folks who fall through the cracks in these systems has always been my north star,” said Lee. “In whatever I pursue, professional or personal, improving the material conditions of the people around me is what motivates me.”
