Leslie M. Thompson receives CIRM award

Leslie M. Thompson, Donald Bren Professor of psychiatry and human behavior and neurobiology and behavior

Leslie M. Thompson, Donald Bren Professor of psychiatry and human behavior and neurobiology and behavior, has received a $12 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine for a first-of-its-kind clinical trial of a novel neural stem cell therapy for Huntington’s disease. “This trial is an exciting step for regenerative medicine and its potential to change the course of Huntington’s disease,” said Thompson. “It provides additional hope to patients and families who currently have very few options.”

The University of California convened its top public health leaders at UC Irvine for an assessment of the state of public health in America. The Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health hosted the event, which brought together deans and program directors shaping public health education in California. They emphasized that California is strengthening public health capacity, investing in infrastructure, climate resilience, community-engaged research and training future practitioners to navigate disinformation and political headwinds.

UCI Health – Irvine opens its doors

Last week marked a historic milestone as UCI Health – Irvine officially opened its doors, bringing innovative, all-electric, patient-centered care to Orange County. The seven-story, 144-bed facility is the nation’s first all-electric hospital and the sixth in the UCI Health system. “At UCI Health, we are driven by our desire to offer high-quality, friendly and easy-to-access care throughout Orange County and surrounding communities,” said Chad T. Lefteris, UCI Health president and CEO. “Because of our talented caregivers and the co-workers who support them, the pioneering healthcare we provide is now closer to patients’ homes.”

Sarah McBane has been reappointed as the associate dean of pharmacy education for the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. “Dr. McBane has provided exemplary leadership to develop, implement and evaluate all curricular elements of the PharmD program, including the development of office staff, policies and procedures,” said Jan Hirsch, founding dean.
