Museum director appointed

Kathryn Kanjo newly appointed museum director of the UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art








Kathryn Kanjo has been appointed museum director of the UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art. Currently the David C. Copley director and CEO of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, she will assume her new role here in February 2026. She will also oversee the UC Irvine Jack & Shanaz Langson Institute of California Art. “Kathryn brings a tremendous combination of deep curatorial expertise and demonstrated visionary leadership at premier institutions throughout the country,” said Chancellor Howard Gillman. “She is the ideal person to lead the museum during this transitional period and into an exciting new future.”

Richard Matthew, professor of urban planning & public policy and director of the Climate and Urban Sustainability Program, inspired attendees at the "Building Sustainable Communities: Driving Sustainability, Circularity and Equality" conference with a positive take on addressing climate change. “We still have time to move off of some of these alarming and unsustainable trajectories,” said Matthew. “We can improve the relationships we have with each other and our communities and the environment.”

A study led by Dr. Michael A. Daneshvar, UCI Health urologist, has found that adults who abuse or have a dependence on cannabis might have an increased risk of developing bladder, kidney or prostate cancer. “Given that cannabis is recognized as the most used illicit substance in the U.S., along with a rise in use worldwide, understanding the association between its use and the risk of urologic malignancies is of great importance,” he said.

In this video, alums reflect on UC Programs in Medical Education, an innovative training curriculum focused on addressing health care workforce shortages and meeting the needs of California’s communities. The program, which began at UC Irvine in 2004, has since grown to 10 programs across 8 campuses, including the six UC schools of medicine.

Since 2012, the Master of Science in Biomedical and Translational Science program has remained on the cutting edge of training investigators to translate their biomedical discoveries into clinical practice. With its new director, Gerard Slobogean, MS-BATS is poised for continued growth and expanded impact, which is as critical as ever given the severe workforce shortage of clinical and translational researchers. “MS-BATS inspires and prepares students to tackle hard questions,” said Slobogean. “With the goal of improving the care of our society.”
