Katrine Whiteson, a professor of molecular biology and biochemistry, studies of how human gut microbiomes affect health have turned her into an apostle for chia seeds, avocados and other high-fiber foods. And her research has garnered an unusual array of financial backers, including federal research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency. “A healthy microbiome in your digestive tract can help stave off heart disease, cancer and other ailments, " said Whiteson. #StandUpForUC #SpeakUpForScience |

Sean Young, professor of informatics and emergency medicine, has set out to determine whether listening to jazz – with its unpredictable nature – could make people more comfortable with the unpredictability of life. His study, “Mindful Jazz and Preferred Music Interventions Reduce Pain Among Patients with Chronic Pain and Anxiety: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial,” shows a significant decrease in pain and anxiety for those who mindfully listened to jazz, which could lead to a reduction in opioids for patients. The research is funded in part by the National Institutes of Health. #StandUpForUC #SpeakUpForScience |

The Luce Family Fellowship |
Duncan Luce was a Distinguished Professor of cognitive sciences at UC Irvine, helping shape modern psychology and game theory in the 1950s. This earned him the National Medal of Science and cemented the campus’s reputation as an academic leader in the field. Now, to mark the centennial of his birth, his wife, Carolyn Scheer, has endowed a new graduate fellowship to honor and extend his legacy. The Luce Family Fellowship in Mathematical and Behavioral Sciences will support a doctoral candidate whose work relates to the field Luce pioneered. Recipients can come from any department at UC Irvine, the campus where Luce dedicated the last 25 years of his career. |
