Expanding access to graduate study |
The Logic & Philosophy of Science Summer Development Program welcomed its fourth student group this summer, bringing 15 undergraduates to campus to explore graduate-level logic & philosophy of science topics and connect with faculty and graduate mentors. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the program was launched in 2022 by professor Lauren Ross, particularly for students from underrepresented backgrounds. “Resources and information about graduate school are not accessible to many students, especially when it comes to areas of study such as logic and philosophy of science,” she said. “This program aims to provide these resources – insight into different research areas, the grad school application process, styles of argumentative writing and life in graduate school and academia.” |

Staying safe during a heat wave |
When the weather heats up, it’s important to remember to hydrate with water and avoid alcohol to prevent heat-related illness, says UCI Health emergency medicine physician Dr. Ryan Gibney, who spoke with KTLA Channel 5. “I’m not opposed to a morning coffee, but water should be the go-to when out and about in extreme heat. If attending an outdoor event, I highly recommend avoiding alcohol. It can contribute to dehydration and increase the effects of heat exhaustion.” |

Recognizing emergency management and empowering preparedness |
September is National Preparedness Month – a nationwide initiative encouraging individuals, families and communities to take proactive steps for emergency readiness. Whether it’s assembling a go-bag, making a family emergency plan or simply staying informed, proactive actions can make a difference. Last month was National Emergency Management Awareness Month, which recognized the professionals behind the scenes who plan for and coordinate responses to emergencies. At UC Irvine, the Emergency Management team works year-round to ensure the campus is prepared, from managing emergency plans and training to leading the Emergency Operations Center during major incidents. Here’s a video to learn more about the importance of emergency management. To become familiar with the EM department, visit: em.uci.edu. |
