Friendship and philanthropy |

Never doubt the power of a small group of passionate Anteater alumni and friends when they unite behind a shared vision. Since the launch of UC Irvine’s Brilliant Future Campaign in 2019, the School of Social Sciences Dean’s Leadership Society – founded a decade ago with just a dozen alumni – has grown exponentially. Over the course of the campus campaign, the society has provided more than $1.6 million to support programs impacting every corner of the school. “The unwavering support of our Dean’s Leadership Society has enabled the School of Social Sciences to make remarkable strides in fostering academic excellence, advancing groundbreaking research, and creating a nurturing environment for our students and faculty,” said Bill Maurer, dean of the School of Social Sciences. |

Researchers find misinformation |

Denise Diaz Payán, associate professor of health, society and behavior, and Tessa Pulido, doctoral student, both from the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health, co-authored a study that found numerous statements of misinformation about policies related to COVID-19 made by residents during Riverside County Board of Supervisors meetings between 2020 and 2022. The findings illustrate that this misinformation cultivated strong mistrust of public officials and health departments, which was an additional burden on public health efforts to provide information effectively and promote disease prevention. “Misinformation about vaccines and disease prevention continues to be pervasive in our society and can be harmful to people and communities,” said Diaz Payán. |
