Jane Baldwin is working to help people better understand how bad heatwaves can be for individuals and those around them. The professor of Earth system science studies how human-driven climate change is amplifying the effects of extreme weather events, bridging the divide between studying the physical science behind heatwaves and the role scientists can play in a changing world.

Sean Young, a professor of informatics and emergency medicine

Among his many interests, Sean Young, a professor of informatics and emergency medicine, explores the relationship between music and good health. In his recent study, “Mindful Jazz and Preferred Music Interventions Reduce Pain Among Patients with Chronic Pain and Anxiety: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial,” Young set out to determine whether listening to jazz – with its unpredictable nature – can make people more comfortable with the unpredictability of life. “I’m interested in understanding how sound can affect health,” he said. “We could see a future where certain components of sound or music are being prescribed to patients.”

UC graduate programs earn top marks

The University of California is a premier destination for graduate education, according to the 2025-26 U.S. News Best Graduate Schools rankings. UC once again earned top marks across its 10 campuses for internationally renowned programs in business, education, engineering, law, medicine and nursing. Included in this impressive performance are a slew of No. 1 rankings in fields ranked for the first time in several years, including social sciences and humanities programs, and economics and psychology programs.

Nurses recognized for outstanding service

UCI Health has honored several nurses and staff members who have consistently displayed the values of compassion, courage and integrity. Cynthia Velasco at UCI Health — Los Alamitos and Jacqui Ogilvie at the UCI Medical Center received DAISY awards, which recognize nurses who exemplify what it means to be an outstanding caregiver. And Rafael Aguilar Mendoza, a hospital assistant in orthopedics at the UCI Medical Center, received the Sunflower Award for exemplary service by non-nursing staff members.
