A study from the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has uncovered why the process that reshuffles DNA during reproduction varies so widely between individuals and species. Led by assistant professor Grace Lee (Lee lab team pictured above), the research represents a major step forward in understanding how dynamic genetic elements contribute to evolution.

Prioritizing wellness

Maintaining a healthy body and mind is a top priority for the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute. Offered quarterly, the mindfulness-based stress reduction classes (tai chi class pictured above) teach people to focus on living in the moment, and have been shown to decrease stress and depression and increase heart health. “I think people are longing for spaces of connection,” said Jessica Drew De Paz, director of mindfulness programs. “We can often feel very alone. These classes provide a space where we can sit together, and everyone brings something different, but there’s something that connects us.” Check out the cooking classes, too!

The future of radiocarbon research

A new mini carbon dating system, MICADAS (affectionately dubbed "Terra"), measures radiocarbon levels in materials to determine their ages. Terra also supports a range of environmental studies, including determining the sources of greenhouse gases and aerosols in our atmosphere and understanding the amount of carbon in wetland soils. Terra’s arrival to the School of Physical Sciences expands the capacity for its researchers to study how carbon moves, where it becomes stored and how we might leverage natural systems to mitigate the effects of climate change.
