Study reveals nuclear RNA degradation code |
A study in Molecular Cell led by UC Irvine researchers may help significantly update our understanding of genetic diseases. Their study reveals that “improperly processed RNA transcripts” can cause problems in how our cells function. RNA is the set of instructions that cells use to make proteins, which are essential for our bodies to function. “This revealed key information about quality control in cells,” said the study’s first author Lindsey Soles, working with Yongsheng Shi’s laboratory in microbiology & molecular genetics. “Before this, we had very little understanding of how cells were able to check whether RNAs are properly processed.” |

Having spent many years searching for her calling, social sciences undergraduate student Frankie Boren was delighted to discover the language science program at UC Irvine. Though she just started last fall, she's naturally become interested in psycholinguistics, which allows her to marry her interests in psychology and language. “I wasn’t content to study only what you could create with language. I’m just as curious, if not more so, about what the fundamental nature of language actually is and how it works, and why it works the way it does – like, what is this invisible thing that we are working with?" she says. |
