Professor testifies to German parliament about child abuse

Ilona Yim, a professor of psychological science
Growing up in Germany, Ilona Yim, a professor of psychological science, was a “sent-away” child, one of millions of children in the post-war era who were confined to abusive health camps and suffered long-term mental health trauma. Yim is now a lead scientist with a survivors initiative to raise awareness. In March, she testified before Germany’s parliament about her experience.

Acquisition of hospitals presents 'unique opportunity'

Last week’s acquisition of four community hospitals by UCI Health offers an opportunity to innovate how care is delivered and to expand access to academic medicine. UCI Health President and CEO Chad T. Lefteris spoke to Becker’s Hospital Review about his vision for Orange County’s only academic health system and the possibilities for transforming care in the region.

Med student explains ‘silkpunk’ roots of her fantasy novel

Vanessa Le, a medical student at UC Irvine, just published the first novel in her young adult fantasy duology. In The Last Bloodcarver, 18-year-old protagonist Nhika peddles homeopathic remedies to upper-class clients. After a home visit goes awry, she is outed as a bloodcarver, someone with the feared ability to manipulate biological processes with a single touch. In an interview with Publisher’s Weekly, Le spoke about how her book fits into the ‘silkpunk’ subgenre of science fiction, in which human technology mimics animal or natural biology.
