UCI ANNOUNCEMENTS AND NEWS

Anteater women to play Gonzaga in NCAA first round

women's basketball team cheer at selection Sunday
UCI women's basketball (23-8) earned a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will travel to Spokane, Washington, to face fourth-seeded Gonzaga University in the first round. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The game comes on the heels of a March 16 match in which UCI defeated UC Davis, 53-39, to win the second Big West Championship in program history, and first in 29 years. This will be UCI’s third straight national tournament bid and its first NCAA trip since 1995, when it lost to Stanford in the first round. The 'Eaters made the Women's National Invitation Tournament in each of the last two seasons, advancing to the second round in 2023.

Study suggests sea level rise severity is underestimated

Petermann Glacier drains about 4 percent of the Greenland Ice Sheet as it moves inexorably toward the Arctic Ocean. Photo by Eric Rignot/UCI
Researchers at UCI and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory conducted the first large-scale observation and modeling study of northwest Greenland’s Petermann Glacier (above). Their findings reveal the intrusion of warm ocean water beneath the ice is the culprit in the accelerated melting the glacier has experienced since the turn of the century, and their computer predictions indicate that resulting potential sea level rise will be much worse than previously estimated.
