Anteater Time Machine: Before UCI opened in 1965, KNBC aired a documentary called “Birth of a Campus,” which outlined the history of the area (from Native Americans and Spanish missionaries to the Irvine Ranch), interviewed architect William Pereira about his vision for the university and surrounding city (starting at the 6:27 mark), followed Chancellor Dan Aldrich (speaking with a New England accent) around the empty school (12:40) and highlighted some of the first hires (22:12) and students (23:50).

Sleep your way to good health?

Sleep your way to good health?
Two new articles highlight the connection between sleep and health. In HuffPost’s “5 Things Doctors Always Do To Avoid Getting Sick At The Holidays,” Bernadette Boden-Albala, founding dean of UCI’s Program in Public Health, warns that sleep deprivation, even from a single night of poor slumber, can take a significant toll on a person’s well-being. Similarly, UCI Health’s “Why we need REM sleep to be healthy” explains the importance of that sleep cycle to the immune system and mental health. Sleep medicine expert Dr. Rami N. Khayat discusses how to improve REM sleep.

He aspires to be an old-school pharmacist

UCI student pharmacist Michael Stevens (pictured right)
Inspired by a 1950s pharmacy grad and his own childhood experiences picking up medications for his dad in Visalia, UCI student pharmacist Michael Stevens (above) says he hopes to eventually open an independent pharmacy and give back to the community. In particular, he was struck by a classroom guest speaker who graduated in the 1950s from USC’s PharmD program and “talked about how nice it was to be a part of the community, building up a clientele base, working with the hospitals and being able to sponsor things — like being part of the parades in town,” Stevens said. Following that example “is something that I think I would really enjoy because you have the business aspect, you have the healthcare aspect, and you have the social aspect. You’re part of the community.”
