Smile, you’re on campus camera. Staff, faculty, students and freshly minted alumni can now pose for business headshots in a free photo booth operated by UCI’s Division of Career Pathways. The self-serve, no-appointment booth is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Try some of the recommended poses – chin down, eyes up, arms crossed, shoulder dipped toward the camera – and you’re done in about three minutes.

Rethinking El Niño’s effect on weather

Rethinking El Niño’s effect on weather
Are stormy El Niños a thing of the past? Noting that most of the 26 El Niños since 1950 have failed to soak California like the ones in 1982-83 and 1997-98, scientists are debating whether this winter’s wet El Niño forecasts will also fizzle. Earth system science professor Jin-Yi Yu, whose doubts about a predicted "Godzilla El Niño" in 2015-16 proved correct, told NBC News that the weather phenomenon has been permanently changed by global warming and possibly by deforestation in Southeast Asia. “Recent El Niño and La Niña events have behaved differently from what we initially expected,” Yu said.

Reminder: Vaccination attestation/declination due Friday

By Dec. 1, all campus employees and students must submit either an attestation that they received the 2023-24 flu shot and the updated COVID-19 vaccine or a declination that they are opting out of one or both vaccines. Employees should affirm or decline at the Occupational Health portal; students should use the Student Health Center portal. FAQs about the vaccination policy are available online.

Chamber group performs in Ireland

As part of the American Songbook Choral Festival, the UCI Chamber Singers performed in venues across Ireland in June. In the video above, they sing “O Radiant Dawn” at St. Patrick’s Chapel in Maynooth. Additional songs, including “A Prayer for Ukraine,” accompany a recap of their journey. You can also see them perform holiday music tonight at 7:30, along with other UCI musicians and singers, in a free concert at Bethel Church in Irvine.

#UCIconnected spotlights student, alumni, faculty and staff photos, essays, shoutouts, hobbies, artwork, unusual office decorations, activities and more. Send submissions via email or post on social media with the #UCIconnected hashtag.
