UCI-OC Alliance scholarship boosts high-achieving Latinos

As part of its mission to advance UCI as a Latino-thriving university, the UCI-OC Alliance sponsors Inclusive Excellence Latinx Thriving Alliance Scholarships. Last year, 22 UCI students got them, with the funds applied toward tuition, fees, housing and other academic expenses. Two of those scholars spoke to UCI News about their academic journeys.

Nationwide test of emergency alert systems tomorrow

On Wednesday at approximately 11:20 a.m. the Federal Emergency Management Agency will conduct nationwide tests of the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts. The wireless portion of the tests will send a text alert to all consumer cell phones.

Stephanie Saldana: Inspiring diversity in STEM

Stephanie Saldana, a data science professional program ambassador for the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences

Now a student in UCI’s master of data science professional program, Stephanie Saldana earned her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Ohio State University in 2022. The Mexican-American scholar also just completed a summer internship at Cox Communications and took on the role of graduate co-chair for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at UCI. She is now a data science professional program ambassador for the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. “My goal is to be a shining voice for my community as a first-generation Mexican-American and inspire the younger generation to find their place in STEM,” says Saldana, who spoke about her own struggles in STEM, connecting with a supportive community and encouraging others along the way.
