UCI ANNOUNCEMENTS AND NEWS

It’s official: fragrances do boost memories

UC Irvine researchers (left to right) Michael Leon, Cynthia Woo and Michael Yassa.
UCI neuroscientists have discovered that when fragrances are wafted through the bedrooms of older adults for two hours every night for six months, memories skyrocketed by 226%. The project was conducted through the UCI Center for the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory and involved seven essential oils: rose, orange, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, rosemary and lavender, which were used on a test group of men and women aged 60 to 85 without memory impairment. The team’s study appears in Frontiers in Neuroscience.

UCI Health received a $2 million donation from the Dr. Nicholas R. Conway and Betty Sha Family, which will contribute to development of the $1.3 billion UCI Health – Irvine medical campus. In acknowledgment of this gift, the outdoor infusion center terrace at the future Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building will be named the Nicholas R. Conway, MD, and 888 Betty L. Sha Foundation Infusion Terrace. Set to open in 2024, the infusion center will offer advanced and personalized care to patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment and non-chemotherapy infusions. Conway, who died in 2021, was a 1962 alum of the California College of Medicine, which later became the UCI School of Medicine. Sha is his daughter.

Study links air pollution with pregnancy risks

Findings from a UCI-led study suggest pregnant women exposed to a higher level of air pollution may have a higher risk of spontaneous premature rupture of membranes, a critical obstetrical problem that can significantly increase maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. Co-corresponding author Jun Wu (above), a professor of environmental & occupational health at the Program in Public Health, collaborated with researchers on the study of about 340,000 mothers.
