UCI ANNOUNCEMENTS AND NEWS

‘Indefinitely Wild’ art exhibition opens Saturday

Guest curator Cassandra Coblentz admires Detlef Sammann’s 1915 “Del Monte Forest.”
If you’ve ever seen a painting and wondered what was happening outside the frame when it was created, check out “Indefinitely Wild: Preserving California’s Natural Resources,” a new exhibition that opens Saturday at UCI’s Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art. Running through Sept. 9, the free show juxtaposes idyllic California landscapes with photos, newspaper clippings and other ephemera related to the destruction, commercialization or – occasionally – preservation of such scenery in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 11-year-old math whiz enrolls at UCI

Tycho Elling - 11-year-old math whiz enrolls at UCI
Tycho Elling, an 11-year-old San Juan Capistrano resident who just became the youngest graduate in Irvine Valley College history, will transfer to UCI this fall as a math major. When asked about learning with older students at IVC, Elling said, “With the pandemic and online classes, all of the cameras were off, and everyone thought I was just a normal student taking the class.” He has already taken a few courses at UCI through the Division of Continuing Education. “It’s been really good at UCI,” said Elling with a joke: “It has been really nice to see that there are other people who are really short.”

Research security and integrity website debuts

To help faculty, researchers and research administrators comply with federal security, integrity and disclosure policies, UCI’s Office of Research has created a Research Security & Integrity Compliance website. The RSIC site supports UCI's continued research collaborations with the international community, and contains resources and updates on evolving federal compliance rules for security and integrity. Research personnel are encouraged to use the information about how to comply with federal disclosure requirements as projects move through each phase. The RSIC site also includes information about research security risks and best practices to avoid becoming a target, including when traveling abroad.

#IamUCI: Jessica Cai ’23, B.A. in education sciences and English

A first-generation Chinese American student, Jessica Cai transferred to UCI from Irvine Valley College after a long stretch of hybrid learning to accommodate her rigorous training and packed schedule throughout 15 years of competitive figure skating and dance. This fall, she plans to study for a Master of Education degree at Harvard University in its learning design, innovation and technology program.

#IamUCI: Nick Swink ’23, B.A. in education sciences, political science, and social policy and public service

At UCI, triple major Nick Swink has worked with formerly incarcerated students, interned in the Office of National Drug Control Policy in Washington, D.C., and served as a peer advisor in the UCDC Program. “Eventually, I want to go to law school,” he says, “but I will initially be taking a gap year or two. Ideally, during that time, I would love to work in a job around education work, in either an administrative or policy area.”
