Investigating Asian American mental health

Michael Huynh, a doctoral student in the Program in Public Health
Despite a greater willingness in society to talk openly about mental health, the topic remains off limits for many Asian Americans. Now, Michael Huynh (above, center), a doctoral student in the Program in Public Health, is dedicating his research to unmasking hidden issues around mental health among Asian American subgroups. In his recent co-authored study in Public Health Reports, Huynh analyzed the prevalence of psychological distress and unmet mental health needs among Asian/Asian American adults during the COVID-19 pandemic across various sociodemographic subgroups.

UCI biomedical engineer wins $6 million grant

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine has awarded $6 million to researchers in UCI’s Department of Biomedical Engineering to perform preclinical trial studies of Hyaleon, an engineered neocartilage implant designed to treat defects of the temporomandibular joint. The implant was developed under the guidance of Kyriacos Athanasiou (above), Distinguished Professor of biomedical engineering, who hopes the funding will help commercialize the TMJ treatment.

Researchers uncover new botulinum potential for cosmetics and therapy

In a Nature Communications study, UCI researchers describe ways to develop patented new products for Botox-related cosmetic and therapy use.

If you currently have symptoms of COVID-19 or recently tested positive, do not come to campus, or if you currently live on campus stay in your residence, and follow instructions for reporting your case or assessing symptoms on the UCI Forward page. Close contacts to a COVID-19 case are not required to stay home or quarantine, but should follow guidance for close contact instructions for masking and testing on the UCI Forward page.

UCI provides this notification of a potential workplace COVID-19 exposure. Employees and subcontractors who were in these locations on the dates listed may have been exposed to the coronavirus. You may be entitled to various benefits under applicable federal and state laws and University-specific policies and agreements. The full notification is available on the UCI Forward site. If you have been identified as a close contact to a COVID-19 case, the UCI Contact Tracing Program will contact you and provide additional direction.
