UCI Podcast: A history lesson in sports television

The changing face of sports TV

As March Madness begins, Victoria E. Johnson, a UCI professor of film and media studies and African American studies, discusses how sports television has changed over time. A transcript of the wide-ranging interview is also available.

The incredible shrinking attention span

Shorter TV commercials, shorter film cuts, shorter attention spans. What’s driving the phenomenon? Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics, says it’s not all technology’s fault. People are now self-interrupting even without external distractions. In an interview with Newsweek, she discusses her research on the trend and how to reclaim your focus and attention.

A post-Oscars look at movies filmed at UCI

UCI has yet to win an Oscar, but not for lack of movie appearances. Over the years, the campus has popped up in such films as “Poltergeist,” “Ocean’s Eleven” and Mel Brooks’ “Silent Movie,” which features Paul Newman and Aldrich Park in one of Hollywood’s craziest chase scenes. Other cameos include a “Planet of the Apes” sequel, “Creator” and a UCI-adjacent scene involving a giraffe on Highway 73 in “The Hangover Part III.” The university’s closest brush with an Academy Award was when 1989 computer science alumnus Jim Berney was nominated for best visual effects for “The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”
