SAGE Scholars teaches career and life skills to promising UCI students

The Student Achievement Guided by Experience program at UCI was founded in 1999 by the UC Office of the President as part of an initiative to increase the pipeline of diverse students going into the workforce and postgrad programs. Nine UC campuses originally established the program; only UCI’s remains. The two-year professional development program is open to low-income, accelerated sophomores, juniors and seniors planning to stay a fifth year at UCI. SAGE Scholars recruits these students, elevates them and connects them to opportunities to succeed.

Lunar New Year celebrations return to UCI

The Lunar New Year is, by a wide margin, the most important holiday in East Asia, celebrated by millions as an opportunity to gather with family and friends over meals, return home to honor ancestors and enjoy festive outdoor performances. On Jan. 17, UCI will celebrate the official start of the Year of the Rabbit. Ahead of the occasion, School of Social Sciences’ Jill Kato interviewed Henry Huang, a 1997 alumnus, who–with backing from the UCI Long U.S.-China Institute–played an integral role in launching the daylong campus festival.

Experts warn of potent new coronavirus strain

A new COVID-19 strain known as XBB.1.5 has quickly been spreading in the United States over the past few weeks. As of Friday, the Centers for Disease Control estimated that it made up 27.6% of cases across the country. The new subvariant has a potent array of mutations that appear to help it evade immune defenses and improve its ability to invade cells, making it the most transmissible variant that has been detected yet, according to the World Health Organization.
